Recently, the EPC General Contracting Project for 49,000 m³ Low-temperature Liquid Ammonia Storage Tanks and Auxiliary Facilities undertaken by China National Air Separation Engineering Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as CNASEC) has been officially put into operation. The world’s first ammonia-fueled ocean-going vessel Antwerp, carrying 45,000 m³ of liquid ammonia, successfully completed its historic maiden voyage and first loading operation at the Jiangsu Andefu Nanjing Tank Terminal.
This marks the official entry of the project into a new stage of commercial operation. It not only delivers another benchmark achievement for the energy infrastructure development of Nanjing, greatly improves the liquid ammonia storage, handling and emergency support capacity of the Yangtze River Delta and even East China, but also consolidates critical storage and transportation support for the high-quality development of the liquid ammonia industry.


Located in the Nanjing Jiangbei New Materials Science and Technology Park, the project is a key initiative of the city of Nanjing. At its core, it comprises one 49,000 m³ large-scale cryogenic liquid ammonia storage tank and two 3,000 m³ ambient‑temperature liquid ammonia spherical tanks, supported by a comprehensive loading/unloading system for trucks and vessels, as well as auxiliary utility facilities. The facility boasts an annual liquid ammonia throughput capacity of up to 600,000 tonnes. During the project’s construction, the Chinese air separation team pioneered a refined management approach—“grid-based management plus node‑focused problem‑solving”—to tackle multiple challenges. By proactively coordinating among all stakeholders, addressing technical hurdles, and optimizing resource allocation, they advanced the project with “air separation speed.” On May 23 this year, the project commenced full-scale trial production and, in just 18 days, achieved successful startup on the first attempt and completed the first outbound shipment, setting a new domestic record for the fastest turnaround from trial production to commercial operation among large‑scale cryogenic storage tank projects of similar type.
