July 26, The world’s largest single-unit green ammonia plant—the Dahan Wind-Solar-to-Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Integrated Demonstration Project of State Power Investment Corporation—has gone into operation, setting four global firsts: “large-scale green ammonia production, large-scale hybrid hydrogen production, DC microgrid, and solid-state hydrogen storage.” This milestone marks a historic leap forward for China in the field of green hydrogen-based energy, providing “China’s momentum” to the global energy transition. Among them, the air separation unit constructed by China Air Separation Co., Ltd. was the first to successfully go into operation on June 16. Since commissioning, the unit has been running smoothly, providing a reliable supply of nitrogen feedstock for ammonia synthesis and serving as a “feedstock engine.”

The first battle was victorious, and nitrogen gas production was launched ahead of schedule.

As the first batch of green ammonia was successfully dispatched from the site of the State Power Investment Corporation’s Da’an Wind-Solar-to-Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Integrated Demonstration Project, the project—capable of producing 32,000 tons of green hydrogen and 180,000 tons of green ammonia annually—officially entered commercial operation. As a national demonstration project for clean, low-carbon hydrogen energy and one of the 100 strategic emerging industries, this project harnesses the abundant wind and solar resources in western Jilin Province to generate green electricity. The green hydrogen is produced via water electrolysis, and then combined with nitrogen from the air to synthesize green ammonia under the catalytic action of a specialized catalyst. The resulting green ammonia will find wide applications in sectors such as chemicals, transportation, and power generation. And—in... In this green industrial chain, As a green pioneer in the new energy sector, China Air Separation fully leverages its strengths in providing value-added services throughout the entire lifecycle of engineering projects, undertaking air separation plant projects and ensuring stable production of qualified nitrogen gas. An efficient “raw material engine” has been built for the entire project.

Looking back at the entire construction journey, the Chinese air separation project team meticulously refined their work over a period of 14 months and achieved the first-ever commissioning of the air separation unit on June 16. As the final valve was opened, the entire air separation process was fully integrated, and nitrogen gas meeting stringent quality standards—with an oxygen concentration below 0.5 ppm—began to be produced steadily. Throughout this period, the Chinese air separation project team worked closely with all relevant parties, battling tirelessly day and night, rigorously ensuring both quality and safety. They efficiently completed a series of critical tasks—including putting the air compression station into operation, conducting coordinated test runs of the equipment units, performing bare-cooling tests, and filling the pearl sand—laying a solid foundation for the smooth commissioning of the entire plant.

Staying steadfast and fighting bravely, providing professional support and protection.

From the construction phase through to the start-up of the air separation unit, the Party member task force has consistently remained firmly rooted in the heartland of the Northeast Plain, taking the lead and charging forward with unwavering determination. Upholding the “Iron Army” spirit, they have stepped up to shoulder their responsibilities, becoming true “guardians of the plant.” At every critical juncture, they’ve worked overtime and put in extra effort; during the commissioning phase, they’ve stayed up all night monitoring the system closely, leaving no minor anomaly unnoticed. With professionalism and hard work, they’ve fully met the stringent requirements of this national demonstration project, thereby establishing a robust safety barrier for the high-quality construction and smooth operation of the plant.

It’s worth noting that during the final sprint phase, in anticipation of various extreme operating conditions, the project team proactively identified potential risks and developed contingency plans. At 3 a.m., the pre-cooling system encountered a “critical situation.” Relying on their solid professional expertise and extensive commissioning experience, the team swiftly activated the contingency plan, promptly stabilized the operating conditions, and consistently demonstrated a high sense of responsibility throughout the entire process, ensuring the smooth completion and commissioning of the project.
