Recently, the Hangzhou Municipal Science and Technology Bureau announced the “2024 Municipal Key Research Program Projects,” and the project “Research and Industrialization of Key Technologies for Networked Control Systems in Process Industries,” submitted by China Air Separation, was successfully approved.

Against the backdrop of Hangzhou City’s vigorous promotion of a headquarters economy development model and the “westward expansion” strategy for process industry enterprises, this project has explored and pioneered a brand-new networked control system architecture for the process industry—a combination of a “locally operated brain” and geographically dispersed factories.

This project focuses on a system configuration that integrates a digital twin-driven local-process control system, a low-latency, high-reliability, and highly secure data transmission system, and an integrated edge controller at the remote site. It addresses three key challenges: First, at the local site: develop an integrated digital twin system for geographically dispersed process industries that combines predictive warning, collaborative optimization, and intelligent decision-making. Second, at the transmission end: propose a secure and trustworthy network communication architecture that integrates cloud, edge, and terminal components under a collaborative production model for process industries and operational control across geographically dispersed sites. Third, at the remote site: develop an intelligent edge controller that is seamlessly integrated with the manufacturing execution units of the process industry. Ultimately, the project will create a geographically dispersed digital twin system for process industry plants based on a cloud-edge collaborative, information-security-enhanced network and achieve industrial-scale implementation.

The R&D of this project has laid a solid technological foundation for the development of a specialized fine chemical industrial park, further promoting cross-regional cooperation among industrial clusters. It also provides practical and feasible solutions for achieving higher levels of technological innovation, talent development, and safety management.

Over the years, China Air Separation has actively explored the integrated development of technological innovation and new business models. It has spearheaded and participated in numerous key provincial- and city-level R&D projects, contributing its wisdom and strength to the high-quality development of the chemical industry.
